It is with great sadness that we have to announce that George Mackey passed away on March 15, 2006.

George Mackey (1916-2006) got his PhD in 1942 at Harvard university under Marshall Stone. He worked in the fields of representation theory, group actions, functional analysis and mathematical physics.

George Mackey joined the Harvard Mathematics department in 1943 as an assistant professor and became full professor in the year 1969. Until his retirement in 1985, he was the Landon T. Clay Professor of mathematics at Harvard University.

A memorial service is now officially scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 2 PM at Harvard's Memorial Church.
