Xfig

xfig is an X-windows based MacDraw-like program which can be used to create figures of various types, to be included in tex documents or printed out separately. This section will not deal with the details of the actual figure creation -- read the online documentation for fig. Rather, it will concentrate on the problem of converting the output of fig into something useful. There are three basic possibilities, each with advantages and disadvantages. The first is to produce output compatible with the latex picture environment, the second is to produce output for the extended picture environment called eepic, and the third is to produce a PostScript file that can be printed directly by the laser printer or included in a latex file using the \psfig command.
