Andrew Mattei Gleason, 1921 - 2008

It is with sadness that we have to announce that Andy Gleason passed away in the night from October 17 to 18, 2008. Andy Gleason graduated from Yale in 1942. He was appointed junior fellow at Harvard in 1946, and was full professor at Harvard from 1957 to 1992. In 1969, he became the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. Since 1992, Andy Gleason was emeritus professor at the Harvard Mathematics department.

His areas of research were Banach spaces and classical geometry. He is known for his contribution to the solution of Hilbert's 5th problem.
