 Sectioning: After the introductory meetings,
calculus is taught entirely in sections.
To enroll in
MathXa,
Math 1a,
Math 1b,
Math 21a and
Math 21b you
must section by computer during the period starting Monday,
September 19th, and no later than 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21th.
Note that you can re-section as often as you
like during this time and your previous entry will be erased.

Using any Harvard computer, login into your FAS account. At the shell prompt, type
"ssh section@ulam.fas.harvard.edu"

Your section assignment will be emailed to you by 5:00 pm Friday, September 23th.

available as follows: (we prefer to do calculus

Online placement re-exam:
The Mathematics Department offers an online placement re-exam for those
of you who question the placement advice that you receive from the pencil
and paper exam.
If your placement advice from the online exam differs from that stemming
from todays exam, you should take the results from both exams to one of
our placement advisors listed above.
With regards to placement: The placement score indicates either placement
in Math Xa, Math 1a, Math 1b, or it indicates general eligibility for any
of the following: Math 19, 20, 21a, 23a, 25a, 55a and Applied Math 21a.
It does not distinguish between the latter as all but Math 55a demand more
or less the same level of preparation. A choice between Math 19, 20, 21a,
23a, 25a, 55a and Applied Math 21a should be based on your interests. A
meeting entitled "Should I take Math 19, 20, 21, 23, 25, or 55" will
start at 4pm on Thursday, September 15 in Science Center Lecture Hall D.
All questions concerning these courses will be answered at that meeting.
Questions that arise after the meeting should be addressed to the Math
Departments Head Tutor Peter Kronheimer (kronheim@math).
The online exam can also be taken to see
whether you have the necessary math prerequisites for certain courses
at Harvard that list Math 1b, 21a or 21b as a prerequisite. In particular,
the online exam covers material that is not on todays exam but which is
assumed in courses that list Math 1b, 21a or 21b as a prerequisite.
Note in particular that high scores on the BC Advanced Placement
exam or a Math 1b, 21a or 21b like course taken elsewhere may not cover
the required material. Feedback to show what specific math skills you
need so as to meet the prerequisites for a course that asks for either
Math 1b, Math 21a or Math 21b. A Math Warm-Up Series is also offered
during the first week of the semester to help you brush up on rusty
math skills. The schedule is below.
Each online exam consists of 3040 multiple-choice questions and can be
taken at any time from a computer on the Harvard network. Note that
you can take the online exam more than once.
In any event, remember: If you have conflicting placement advice,
you should talk with a placement advisor.
